HIGH SCHOOL OF THE DEAD
The manga fan service gorefest is now an amazing anime by studio Madhouse. This show has become a massive success in 3 short weeks with the internet and all of japan.
The premise is that Japan has been hit with a festering zombie epidemic and 5 high schoolers and the school nurse are stuck right in the middle. Will they survive with the whole world crumbling around them, watch and see.
The show is amazingly fluid and does justice to the much more western themes of horror and action that is usually lacking in most Japanese works. That is not to say that this isn’t japanese but that it’s strengths feel so much like Western/American flavor. Think Zac Snyder’s Dawn of the dead remake meets Left 4 Dead with a hint of Degrassi (yeswe all know you have seen Degrassi). The animation is on par with big budget shows like Bleach and Naruto and the action and gore is amazingly depicted in quick cuts and sometimes slow mo sequences. It’s humorous at times but never have I seen a more poignant and sometimes touching rendition of life in the zombie apocalypse in anime. Yes it is not the walking dead, but it doesn’t have to be.
